Where to Play Mahjong in Texas Hotels: A Dallas–Fort Worth Getaway Guide

The quick answer: Three Dallas–Fort Worth hotels make mahjong part of the stay:

  • Bowie House in Fort Worth holds lessons and open play in its Billet Room on Monday nights from 7 to 9 pm.
  • Hotel Crescent Court in Dallas offers fireside play in the lobby and open play in Babou's bar on select nights.
  • Kimpton Pittman Hotel in Dallas lends guests a complete mahjong set for free.

Mahjong has left the card table and checked into the hotel lobby. Grandmothers who have played for decades now share tables with Gen Z players who learned last month. Travel writer Lindsay Cohn covered the trend in her piece for Hotels Above Par, "Mahjong's Chic Comeback Has Reached the Hotel Lobby". She featured boutique hotels from Shelter Island to San Francisco.

Two of the hotels she featured are in North Texas, and I've added one local favorite. Here's where to take your group, and how to turn game night into a weekend.

Mahjong takes four players, which is just the right size for a trip with friends. It's small enough for real conversation and big enough to feel like a party.

The game also gets everyone off their phones. Your hands are busy with tiles, and your attention is on the table and the people around it. Between hands there's time to catch up, trade strategy, and order another round.

This is where a hotel beats a home game. No one hosts, no one cleans up, and no one makes a grocery run. The tables are set before you arrive, a cocktail is never far away, and when the last tile falls, your room is an elevator ride away.

Bowie House, Auberge Collection (Fort Worth): best for mahjong lessons

If you plan one mahjong stay this year, make it Bowie House. Mahjong has been part of the hotel's identity almost since it opened.

Game nights happen in the Billet Room, which has peacock-blue walls and art from the hotel's collection. Lessons and open play run Mondays from 7 to 9 pm, led by The Mahj Club instructor Amanda Mosley. Recent introductory lessons cost $78 per person, cocktail included. Mulberry, the hotel's library-style lounge, also hosts game nights.

Bowie House has 106 rooms, the Bricks and Horses chophouse, and Ash Spa. It earned two Michelin Keys less than a year after opening, according to Time Out.

Address: 3700 Camp Bowie Blvd., Fort Worth, TX 76107

Good for: girls' weekends, a mahjong group's annual trip, and beginners who want a real lesson.

Room Rates: Starting at $444 per night
VIP perks at Bowie House when you book with us, including an upgrade on arrival (when available), a daily $30 breakfast credit per person, a $100 hotel credit, a seasonal welcome amenity, and early check-in or late checkout (when available)

Hotel Crescent Court (Dallas): best for experienced players

This hotel isn't in the original article, but Dallas players already know it. D Magazine names the fireplace in the lobby of Hotel Crescent Court as its favorite place to play mahjong in Dallas. Ask nicely and the staff at Isabelle's, the ground-floor bar, may wheel the martini cart over to your table.

On select nights, open play moves downstairs to Babou's, an underground bar named after Salvador Dalí's ocelot. Ask about dates when you book.

Good for: groups who already play, a Dallas staycation, and pairing game night with an Uptown dinner.

Room Rates: Starting at $637 per night

Kimpton Pittman Hotel (Dallas): best for playing anywhere, for free

Kimpton's free Mahjong & Mingle amenity lets you play wherever you like. Ask at the front desk for a complete set: tiles by artist Lulie Wallace, dice, a game mat, a pusher, racks and printed instructions. Then set up in your room, by the pool, or in the lobby.

The Pittman is a 1916 landmark designed by African American architect William Sidney Pittman. It's in Deep Ellum, Dallas's live-music and entertainment district. The hotel has Elm & Good, an all-day American tavern, and Deep End, a poolside bar.

The Pittman has no instructor, so it suits groups who already know the game. Beginners can still come if they book a private lesson ahead of time.

Address: 2551 Elm St., Dallas, TX 75226

Good for: groups who already play, a lively city weekend, and a laid-back pool-and-music vibe.

Room Rates: Starting at $304 per night

Sample Itinerary: A Fort Worth Mahjong Weekend for Four

Here's one way to plan three nights at Bowie House around Monday game night. Every part can be adjusted.

  1. Saturday: Check in and have welcome cocktails at the hotel bar, then dinner at Bricks and Horses.
  2. Sunday: Spend the morning at a Fort Worth museum. In the afternoon, play a practice round in the Mulberry lounge.
  3. Monday: Book Ash Spa during the day, then go to the Billet Room lesson and open play from 7 to 9 pm.
  4. Tuesday: Have a slow breakfast and check out.

If you can't do a Monday, I can ask the hotel about a private lesson on your dates. It depends on availability.
