Thanksgiving Travel Tips for Flyers and Drivers

Travel Tips

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with record-breaking numbers expected both on the road and in the air. Planning ahead can save you time, stress, and even money. Here’s what you need to know to navigate the holiday rush like a pro.

For Flyers

Nearly 6 million people will take domestic flights this Thanksgiving, according to AAA. Expect longer wait times at security and crowded airports. Here are a few tips to make your journey smoother:

  • Add Your Known Traveler Number (KTN): TSA PreCheck and Global Entry can save valuable time. If you forgot to add your KTN during booking, call your airline or stop by the ticket desk before check-in.
  • Avoid Peak Times: Hopper predicts the busiest airport hours are:
    • Morning (8 a.m.–12 p.m.): ATL, DFW, DEN, LAX, ORD, LAS, PHX, CLT
    • Evening (4 p.m.–8 p.m.): JFK, MCO

  • Arrive Early: Be at the airport at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours for international.
  • Use Reserve by Clear: At select airports, you can book a security screening appointment to bypass long lines.

For Drivers

A whopping 71.7 million travelers will hit the road this year, according to AAA—a 1.3 million increase from last year. Here’s how to avoid the worst of the congestion:

  • Use Traffic Apps: Stay updated on delays, especially in major metro areas like NYC, LA, Boston, and DC.
  • Avoid Peak Times:
    • Monday (11/25), Tuesday (11/26), and Wednesday (11/27): 1 p.m.–7 p.m.
  • Drive at Off-Peak Hours:
    • Best times: Early mornings before 10 a.m. (Monday–Wednesday)
    • Returning home? Leave before 1 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday.
  • Consider Thanksgiving Day: Traffic is typically light, making it an ideal travel day if your schedule allows.

Plan Ahead for a Stress-Free Holiday

Whether you’re flying or driving, a little preparation goes a long way. From adding your KTN to timing your road trip perfectly, these tips will help you navigate record-breaking crowds with ease.

Safe travels!
